How do we make sure our sessions are inclusive?
1. Adapt Activities for All Abilities
-
Different entry points: Design each project with multiple difficulty levels so learners can take part at their own pace, e.g., some may assemble pre-cut pieces while others measure and saw.
-
Choice of tools: Offer both manual and adaptive tools (like easy-grip handles, safety saws, or cordless drills).
-
Flexible outcomes: Celebrate every result, a finished product, partial build, or even a design sketch all count as achievements.
2. Sensory-Friendly Environment
-
Reduce background noise where possible and provide quiet spaces or sensory breaks.
-
Use natural textures and materials (wood, soil, leaves) to create grounding sensory experiences.
-
Incorporate calming, repetitive tasks (like sanding or painting) for learners who benefit from structure and focus.
3. Accessibility in Setup and Space
-
Ensure working tables and benches are adjustable or varied in height for wheelchair users.
-
Keep pathways clear and safe for mobility aids.
-
Use portable, lightweight tools so workshops can take place anywhere, indoors or outdoors.
4. Communication and Support
-
Use visual instructions, diagrams, and step-by-step cards alongside verbal explanations.
-
Encourage peer support, pairing learners to share tasks and strengths.
-
Provide alternative communication tools (picture boards, gesture cues, or verbal prompts) for non-verbal learners.
5. Emotional Inclusion
-
Start every session with a short confidence-building chat: remind learners there’s no right or wrong way to make something.
-
Use positive reinforcement and celebrate effort, creativity, and teamwork as much as the finished product.
-
Give learners ownership, let them name their creations or decide how and where projects will be displayed.
6. Co-Design with Schools
-
Before each session, talk to SENCOs and teachers to understand learners’ needs, triggers, and interests.
-
Adapt project length, tool use, or noise levels accordingly.
-
Involve school staff in co-facilitation for continuity and comfort.
7. Representation and Belonging
-
Use visuals and materials that show diversity, children of different abilities, backgrounds, and identities.
-
Invite learners to share ideas for projects that reflect their culture, community, or interests.
8. Reflect and Evolve
-
Collect feedback from learners, teachers, and support staff after each workshop.
-
Regularly review what worked well and what could be improved for next time.
