Frequently Asked Questions
How are learners kept safe during the session?
Safety is our top priority. All sessions are fully risk-assessed and led by experienced facilitators with enhanced DBS checks, safeguarding training, and first aid qualifications. We use age-appropriate tools and materials, teach safe working practices step-by-step, and maintain a high adult-to-student ratio to ensure close supervision at all times.
Do learners need any previous experience or skills?
Not at all! Our workshops are designed for all ability levels. We guide learners through every stage of the project, from planning and measuring to building and finishing, so everyone can take part and succeed.
What is the group ratio?
At Make & Grow Workshops, safety and engagement are at the heart of everything we do. We recommend a ratio of one Make & Grow team member to no more than three learners to ensure close supervision and meaningful participation.
This doesn’t mean sessions are limited to three learners — larger groups are welcome as long as a member of your school team is present to provide additional support.
We also take into account the number of tools available and the nature of the project. As a general guideline, we don’t suggest more than three learners working on a single project unless it can be divided into separate, manageable parts. This approach helps ensure every learner stays actively involved and feels like a valued part of the team.
We encourage you to advise on the most suitable group size and which learners work best together, as you know your students and their needs best
Can you adapt sessions for students with special educational needs (SEN)?
Absolutely. Inclusion is at the heart of what we do. We have extensive experience working with SEN learners and tailor each activity to individual needs. This might include sensory-friendly tools, visual instructions, smaller groups, or extra one-to-one support.
What kind of projects do you run?
Our projects vary depending on the school’s goals and age group. Popular builds include birdhouses, planters, garden furniture, and even squirrel assault courses! Each project begins with the learners’ own designs and is built from scratch using recycled or sustainably sourced materials.
Do you provide all the equipment?
Yes we bring all the tools, safety gear, and protective equipment needed for the workshop, so schools don’t have to worry about setup.
We just ask that you provide the materials for the project this could be old furniture, spare timber, or any other suitable items you have available. Our team will confirm what’s needed beforehand and advise on what materials are most appropriate for your chosen project.
Where do the workshops take place?
Workshops are delivered on school grounds, either outdoors (in a garden or playground) or indoors (in a hall or classroom). We adapt to the space available and ensure the setup is safe and accessible for all learners.
How long does a workshop last?
Sessions can be tailored from short one-off experiences to multi-day projects or long-term programmes. We’ll work with your timetable to find the right fit.
How do you incorporate sustainability?
We use recycled and reclaimed materials wherever possible and teach learners about waste reduction, resourcefulness, and environmental care. Every project connects creativity with sustainability.
